Patented in 1893, Whitcomb Judson (who also invented the pneumatic street railway) invented the zipper, which he called a "clasp locker." It was a device simmilar to another inventors' design from 1851, forty-four years before. But since Judson was the first man to market the clasp locker, he became the "Inventor of the Zipper." It was a complicated hook-and-eye shoe fastener. The clasp locker had its public debut at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and met with little commercial success.

1890- Seagate Technology created the first hard disk drive for microcomputers, the ST506.The disk held 5 megabytes of data, five times as much as a standard floppy disk, and fit in the space of a floppy disk drive. The hard disk drive itself is a rigid metallic platter coated on both sides with a thin layer of magnetic material that stores digital data.
1896- Pixar is founded. Pixar was originally called the Special Effects Computer Group at Lucasfilm (launched in 1979). The group created the computer animated segments of films such as “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” and “Young Sherlock Holmes.” In 1986, Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs paid 10 million dollars to Lucasfilm to purchase the Group and renamed it Pixar. Over the next decade, Pixar made highly-successful (and Oscar-winning) animated films. It was bought by Disney in 2006.

1890- Wyoming enters the union
1893- More than 100,000 white settlers rush into Oklahoma's Cherokee Outlet to claim six million acres of former Cherokee land.
1896- The discovery of gold at Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River near Dawson City, Alaska, sparks the last great Western rush for riches.

1890- The Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris, France. one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower, which is the is the single most visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel the tower was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World's Fair.
1892- The flood of immigration forced the federal government to open up a new center for immigrant processing in a new center for immigrant processing in New York harbor. That center was called "Ellis Island." Millions of immigrants passed through its portal.

Under its terms Taiwan and the Pescasdoeres Islands were ceded to Japan. China recognized Korea's independence, and China was forced to pay a large indemnity to Japan.
